ONLAYS & INLAYS

When a more durable solution is necessary

What are Dental Onlays?

An onlay/inlay may be a good option with a structurally compromised tooth, especially with a risk for fracture with a regular filling. Alternatively, we may prefer an onlay/inlay instead of a crown to avoid removing excessive healthy tooth structure. Making the restoration of ceramic/porcelain allows the restoration to be bonded to the tooth. This bonding process may actually improve the strength of the tooth and help seal the onlay/inlay to the tooth.

A Comparison: Inlays vs. Fillings

When Onlays & Inlays are necessary?

  • To protect a weak tooth due to tooth structure loss
  • To restore an already broken tooth
  • To cover and support a tooth with a large filling
  • To conserve tooth structure
  • To make a cosmetic modification
